Honoring a legacy

MLK DAY

Every January, SSI chapters honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s fight for civil rights alongside a lesser-known part of his legacy: his lifelong support for Israel and the Jewish people.

REMEMBERING DR. KING'S LEGACY OF ISRAEL ADVOCACY

Millions of Americans celebrate Dr. King's fight for the rights of Black Americans every year. Fewer know about his other lasting legacy: a steadfast commitment to Israel advocacy and to fighting antisemitism. Whenever critics tried to draw him into denouncing Israel, King refused, and recommitted himself instead to the Zionist cause.

Just weeks before his assassination in 1968, King addressed the Rabbinical Assembly and made his position unmistakable: Israel's security, he said, "must be a reality," calling the country a living example of what democracy could build out of the desert.

"Israel’s right to exist as a state is incontestable"

Each January, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, SSI chapters bring Dr. King's legacy to their campuses by hosting educational tables that highlight his support for Israel, his commitment to combating antisemitism, and his vision of building bridges between communities.
