BUILDING BOMB SHELTERS ON CAMPUS

APARTHEID WEEK: We're Coming for You...

While anti-Israel groups claim that the "Apartheid Wall," (a.k.a. the security fence against terrorism), makes them feel "unsafe," SSI challenges this idea with the harsh reality that Israelis deal with on a regular basis...rushing to bomb shelters to avoid airstrike terrorism.

During Apartheid Week SSI builds a representation of an Israeli bomb shelter, playing on the popular term of building a “safe space” which is used on campuses today to provide a “shelter” of sorts to those students who need a sanctuary to feel safe.

In order to show the absurdity of the situation that Israeli communities face, we will communicate that the only real  “safe space” for citizens of Israel is in these concrete shelters, despite the “feelings” of the individuals who advocate against us with “apartheid walls."

Most recently, many of us awoke to news that over 200 rockets had been fired from Gaza into Israel, and 48 hours later that number increased to nearly 700 rockets. Attacks like these are being ignored, not only by the mainstream media, but also on campuses.
The outside and inside walls of the shelters will have paintings and facts about several topics including:

  • Statistics of attacks that Israelis suffer from and types of threats.
  • Rockets' range map.
  • Information about Israel’s law that requires all buildings to have a bomb shelters including fortifications in schools and bus stops, and missile protected playgrounds.
  • Information about Hamas as a designated terror organization.
  • Information on "Pay-to-Slay"
  • Names of Israeli victims.
