Pro Israel Bill Passes at Saint Thomas University!
April 15, 2019
Students Supporting Israel would like to congratulate the Saint Thomas University for adopting a resolution in support of the campus' Jewish community and Israel.
The bill was introduced by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the University of St. Thomas Undergraduate Student Government which has 12 members, and adopted by the Student Government as a whole.
This is the 11th pro Israel bill to pass that was written and supported by the members of the Students Supporting Israel chapters nationwide only weeks after SSI chapters defeated BDS resolutions at Columbia University and UC Santa Barbara.
The bill main clauses state:
"Antisemitism includes the delegitimization of Israel through denying Jewish people their right to self-determination and
denying Israel the right to exist.
The University of Saint Thomas Undergraduate Government adopts the definition of antisemitism stated in the first section.
The University of Saint Thomas Undergraduate Government will recognize that the Jewish people, like all peoples, have a collective right to self-determination."
Simon Savvateev the President of SSI at Saint Thomas University said "After months of hard work and discussion, I am proud to announce that the University of Saint Thomas has adopted a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism on its campus. It shows the university truly cares about the Jewish people’s rights to self-determination and expression of their faith. The success of this initiative is important for a lot of reasons. Primarily, it promotes the University of Saint Thomas as an institution that accepts people of the Jewish faith with open arms and will always strive to protect our rights".
Students Supporting Israel once again congratulates the outstanding legislation passed at Saint Thomas University and thanks the student leaders and our partners for their hard work. Students Supporting Israel encourages other students across the country to follow the proactive steps at Saint Thomas University bringing such legislation to their campuses across the country, pushing the BDS movement farther away from our campuses and supporting the Jewish and democratic State of Israel.
Since the establishment of Students Supporting Israel, SSI has passed 11 pro Israel bills across the country, defeated 7 BDS resolutions and has a record of 18-1 against the BDS movement on the campuses SSI is operating.
